I booked at 11pm because the overhead tank was already showing rust at the bottom and the morning school run cannot run on a dry flush. At 5:30 I was in the lane with the pipe ready, the manhole open, a torch, and the booking message on the phone. No tanker. The driver last typed “coming” at 1am. Six hours from a night promise is not traffic. That is a bowser still filling in another ward, or a booking that was never in the queue. I did not switch the motor. There was nothing to lift. I stood there like a fool with a hose, then I set a cut-off clock.
What to check at home while you still wait
Check how much is actually left in the overhead and underground tanks so you know if you can survive till 9am. A dry flush and a dry kitchen are different emergencies. Drinking water in cans is a separate pile. Do not mix them.
Confirm the filling point the driver named. Many Jaipur and Delhi suppliers fill from a private well or a notified stand. If that point has a queue of twelve bowsers, your 5:30 slot was a wish.
Keep the gate clear. A tanker that finally arrives at 6:10 and cannot enter because of two parked cars will leave for the next paying house. That is not the board’s fault.
Do not start calling five new numbers at once without cancelling the first booking in writing. Two tankers at 7am is how you pay twice or fight in the gali.
If you paid an advance, find the proof now: UPI reference, screenshot, or a signed slip. You will need it if you switch suppliers.
Test your own hose and the tank inlet while you wait. A blocked inlet discovered after the tanker arrives wastes the only driver who showed up.
If the municipal line suddenly comes while you wait, fill first, then tell the driver to divert. You still owe him if he already filled for you, unless you cancel before he loads. Ask that rule when you book, not at the gate.
Photos and papers to keep for a no-show
Screenshot the original booking: time, litres promised, rate, name, vehicle number if any. Screenshot every “coming” message with the clock.
Photograph your empty tank at 5:30 so you remember why you booked. Photograph the lane showing no tanker.
If a different tanker arrives, photograph the number plate and the printed litre claim on the tank before anyone opens the valve.
Keep the advance proof in the same folder. If you cancel, send one clear message: cancelled at this time because six hours passed, do not come, refund the advance. Then stop arguing in twenty lines.
Do not post the driver’s photo on a public group. Post the facts to your society group if it is a society booking.
Confirm timing with neighbours who use the same supplier
Ask who else in the lane booked the same fellow. If three houses are waiting on one bowser, you are in a queue that was never numbered. In summer in Rajasthan this is normal. The honest suppliers say “after six bookings.” The rest say “on the way.”
Ask a neighbour which filling point still had water last evening. Dry tubewells push drivers to far wards. A six-hour delay often means they went 30 kilometres and then sat in a diesel line.
Confirm whether municipal tankers are running today. If the ward is sending registered tankers, your private booking may be competing with a cheaper official queue. Neighbours will know if a yellow or numbered municipal bowser passed at 4am.
If the society office booked on behalf of all flats, confirm the purchase order, not a caretaker’s memory. Six hours with no vehicle and no slip is a committee follow-up, not only your fight.
Complaint path and a hard cut-off
Private tanker delay is not a jal board complaint unless you booked the official municipal tanker. For official bookings, use the same ticket system as a supply complaint, with the booking ID, and visit the ward if the app is dead.
For a private supplier, your path is the written cancel, the advance refund request, and if the amount is large and he vanishes, a consumer complaint later. Do not stand in the road blocking other tankers.
Set a cut-off: if he is not at the gate by a named time, you book the second supplier. Tell him that time in one message. Then book the second one only from a number a neighbour has used this month.
When the second tanker is coming, tell the first one again. If both arrive, you take the one you confirmed last and you do not unload twice into a tank that cannot hold it.
If this was a society booking, the secretary should call, not twelve residents. One voice. Record the litres still needed.
Do not offer extra cash on a recorded chat to “jump the queue” unless you are ready for that to become the new rate for the whole summer. It will.
Approximate rates that vary by ward
A private 5000-litre load in many North Indian towns is roughly ₹800 to ₹1,800 when tubewells are kind, and ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 once heat and diesel rise. Mini 3000-litre tankers often sit at ₹600 to ₹1,400, jumping toward ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 in May–June. Some far wards in Rajasthan quote higher because the fill point is distant. Rates vary by ward. Get the figure in writing before the truck leaves the well.
An advance of ₹200 to ₹500 is common. A full prepay to a new WhatsApp number is how people wait six hours with no truck. Pay the balance after the tank level matches the litres you bought.
Municipal registered tankers, where they exist, may be in a band like ₹400 to ₹1,000 for a standard load, sometimes with a wait of a day. Ask the ward the current circular. That rate also varies by ward and by shortage notices.
If you cancel after he has loaded, he may still ask for a trip charge. Trip charges of ₹200 to ₹600 show up in arguments. Decide the rule at booking.
Waiting charges if your gate is blocked are a local habit, not a law. Keep the gate clear. It is cheaper than a fight.
FAQ
Night booking failed. Should I keep waiting till noon?
Not if the tank is empty and you have a second trusted number. Set a cut-off. Six hours without a location share is enough. Keep the cancel message. Book the next load for a litre count you can store, not a panic 10,000 litres you cannot hold.
He shares live location in another colony. Is that proof he is coming to me?
It is proof he is working somewhere. Ask for your slot number. If he has four stops before you, add two hours. If he cannot name your house, cancel.
Can the jal board force a private tanker to arrive?
No. They can tell you how to book an official tanker if the city runs that service. Private delay is a private booking. File with the board only for municipal supply failure or official tanker IDs.
I already paid advance. Do I book a second tanker anyway?
Yes if you need water. Treat the advance as a separate recovery. Do not skip the second booking because of ₹300 pride while the tank is dry. Rates vary by ward; compare the second quote before you pay another advance.
Short note
Paani Atka is not a jal board and does not dispatch tankers. Official helpline and ward office rules apply to municipal tankers and line complaints. Private drivers are a private contract. New boring needs a local permit. Do not take water from a street line while you wait, and do not hijack another house’s tanker. Set a cut-off, keep the advance proof, and count litres when a bowser finally stops at your gate.
